Phil Collins Has a Condition For a Genesis Reunion
Phil Collins said he would be part of a Genesis reunion as long as Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks accept that his son, Nic Collins, be their drummer.
Nic has been touring as part of his father's band since returning to concerts last year, a move that increased speculation that Genesis could also return after an 11-year hiatus.
"I would not say there is not a possibility," Collins told Rolling Stone . "Mike, Tony and I are very close yet. I can not imagine what it would be like if I did not play the drums, but everything is possible."
He recalled that his two colleagues had been "enthusiastic about Nic" after seeing Collins' band in London last year. "Mike made an appropriate comment about 'Just understand it. It just does what it takes and what it takes and why you're doing this for that song.' I thought that saying that was wonderful. At that time (Nic) he was 16 years old," Collins said.
"I think so, if we did something, I think it would have to be with Nic on drums, because I do not think I'll be able to do it. I think his opinion about Nic is high enough to be put on board as part of the band."
Collins said they have not yet had a real conversation. "I mentioned to Tony in a very low voice that if we did something again, it would be with Nic on the drums," he explained. "Somehow he did not say no. But I'm not sure if he heard me or not."
Nic said last year that he would be "ecstatic" if he was invited to participate. That "Genesis material, on drums, is something else, it's absolutely incredible," he reflected. "But to be honest, I do not think there's another Genesis reunion tour. They did it in 2007 and I doubt it will happen again."
