Nick Mason Recognizes the Challenge of Reissuing "Animals" by Pink Floyd
Nick Mason acknowledges that the idea of remastering the Pink Floyd album "Animals" (1977) seems to have become a problem. They are currently struggling to find additional material to complete the set.
A lot of Pink Floyd rarities, like the unpublished 1967 single "Scream Thy Last Scream / Vegetable Man", finally came to light in "The Early Years 1965-1972", 2016. And apparently there is not much left in the files.
When Rolling Stone magazine asked him if the reissue of "Animals" would include additional recordings of some concerts, Mason laughed and said: "It's not that we have not thought about it ... but we'll keep looking".
Roger Waters has already confirmed an upcoming mix of "Animals" with 5.1 surround sound, which will be completed with a cover with new photographs of the Battersea Power Station taken by Aubrey Powell , from the Hipgnosis group of artists.
Meanwhile, Mason is preparing to release a box set of his solo work titled "Unattended Luggage."He is also ready to go on tour with a band called Saucerful of Secrets , which will play Pink Floyd material prior to the era of "Dark Side of the Moon".
That makes a substantial difference between his set list and what Waters and David Gilmour offer in their concerts. "They both have different areas that they like or do not like," Mason said. "David insisted that he did not want to do 'The Nile Song' [from 'More'], while [bassist Guy Pratt ] was crazy about playing it with us ... And playing the first songs of Pink Floyd does not affect what Roger or David or what he does [the tribute band] The Australian Pink Floyd. I could find myself in a comfortable niche and do it out of pure joy"
The drummer also revealed that he obtained the approval of Waters and Gilmour before going on tour. "I thought it would be good manners, and they both supported me," Mason said. "Roger even said he would go and sing one of the songs one night."
The tour with Saucerful of Secrets will begin on September 2 at the Circus in Stockholm (Sweden) and will conclude on September 29 at the Concert Hall in Nottingham (England).
