Neal Schon of Journey Dedicates Performance Of 'Lights' to Steve Perry Nightly on Current To
The sole remaining original founding member of Journey, Neal Schon, has been paying tribute to former lead singer, Steve Perry, with a nightly dedication and performance of the group's 1978 hit "Lights" during the band's current North American tour with Def Leppard.
Lights was Co-written by both Neal Schon and Steve Perry, and was featured on the band's fourth album, "Infinity", and has since become one of Journey's most popular and recognizable songs.
In an interview with Westword Schon said ."I've been hearing that he's been showing up in the same coffee joint that I go to all the time. Hopefully I'll run into him soon. We had a great meeting when we met for the Hall Of Fame." Says Neal "I realized there was still a very deep connection there. He's had nothing but very kind words to say about myself. I've done the same for him. The mutual respect is there. One step at a time. I'd just like to get to know him again and see where he's at."
Journey was founded by Neal Schon in 1972 and he has been the only ongoing member, having performed in every album and tour since. since. The Grammy-nominated guitarist was also a member of Santana and has performed with several other acts including Jan Hammer, HSAS and Bad English, he has recorded 10 solo albums, including his latest album "Vortex".
His guitar playing sound has been described as melodic, and soulful, he has been admired by such artists as Eric Clapton as well as Prince, who reportedly asked for Neal's blessing in releasing "Purple Rain", which mocked a similar sound to Journey's 1983 hit "Faithfully".
Journey's record sales have reached over 100 million worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time, with a wide awry of hits such as, "Lights", "Open Arms" "Don't Stop Believin", "When You Love A Woman" and "Faithfully", among others.
