"My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison is the most played Apple Records song in this century
The music licensing company PPL has published the list of the 20 songs released by Apple Records that have been heard the most in the 21st century.
The list was compiled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the record company founded by The Beatles. Apple Records released their first single, "Hey Jude" by The Beatles, on August 30, 1968.
The list is headed by George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" , which reached number one on the British chart in 1970. In the last 18 years it received more coverage than any of the Beatles songs released through Apple Records, including the successful ones singles "Hey Jude" (3), "Let It Be" (4) and "Get Back" (6). 'My Sweet Lord' also reached number one on the official singles chart of the UK in 2002, after Harrison's untimely death in November of the previous year.
"Imagine" by John Lennon is also above any Beatles material, occupying number two. In the list there are two other releases of Lennon as soloist: "Jealous Guy" (15) and "Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) "(17). Similarly, Paul McCartney & Wings also have three tracks in the Top 20: "Band on the Run" (5), "Live and Let Die" (9) and "Jet" (10).
The only two non-Beatles artists to appear in the Top 20 are Mary Hopkin with her 1968 single "Those Were The Days," produced by Paul McCartney (19). Close the Badfinger list with "No Matter What" (20).
The record company includes a wide range of music and other artists such as The Modern Jazz Quartet, Billy Preston, The Radha Krsna Temple, Ravi Shankar, The Sundown Playboys, James Tavener, James Taylor and Doris Troy.
"The fact that the Beatles songs constitute more than half of the top twenty-five, of which 'Revolution' was a B-side and three of which were never published as singles, is a testament to the large amount of repertoire of The Beatles and also its popularity, "said Peter Leathem , executive director of PPL.
