Happy Birthday Geezer Butler
British bassist Geezer Butler became known as a founding member of the heavy metal band "Black Sabbath", which emerged in 1969 after a few renames from "Earth" and in which he and his school friend Ozzy Osbourne are still active. Butler, whose name is actually Terence Michael Joseph and who has taken the name "Geezer" from his youth as a stage name, writes in addition to his playing on the bass mainly the lyrics for "Black Sabbath.
Geezer Butler was born on 17 July 1949 in Aston. With his friend Ozzy Osbourne in 1967 he founded the group "Rare Breed", which broke up shortly thereafter. Butler was still playing guitar at the time. Since after the founding of "Black Sabbath", who besides Osbourne as lead singer and butler as guitarist Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (drums) belonged and no second guitar, instead a bassist was needed, Butler rose to the bass.
Butler already wrote the lyrics of "Black Sabbath" and has significantly influenced the style of the band through his lyrics. He was one of the first bassists to use the wah-wah effect. This effect pedal and its lower tuned bass have inspired many well-known bass players to use the device and the corresponding settings as well. In the meantime, the lower parts are a stylistic device that is characteristic of heavy metal bands.
Butler has worked as a soloist several times, releasing three of his own albums ("Plastic Planet", 1995, "Black Science, 1997," Ohmwork ", 2005). He had once tried to go his own way when he founded the group "Geezer Butler Band" in 1984. He also went on a joint tour with his friend Osbourne in 1988. Butler briefly returned to "Black Sabbath" in 1991, leaving the band again for his solo projects, but returned to a reunion tour back in the group, which is still active as a songwriter and bassist.
