Dan Peek, (Daniel Milton Peek), was an American musician who wrote, sang, and played several different instruments for the folk-rock band America, best known for its chart-topping hits “A Horse with No Name” (1971), “Ventura Highway” (1972), “Sister Golden Hair” (1975), and “Lonely People” (1974), which Peek composed. Peek met two other American expatriates, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, on a U.S. Air Force base in England, where all of their fathers were serving, and when the three friends formed a band, they named it America to emphasize their nationality.
Their first album, America (1971), won a Grammy for best new artist; it was followed by several more successful albums before Peek left the band in 1977 to switch to Christian pop music. His first solo album, All Things Are Possible (1979), received a Grammy nomination. He continued writing and recording Christian music until 2007.
