Glenn Frey and J.D. Souther’s ‘Longbranch/Pennywhistle’ to be Reissued
Nearly a half a century after its release, the collaboration between J.D. Souther and his longtime songwriting partner Glenn Frey will once again shine when the Longhouse/Pennywhitsle is re-released on September. 28.
Intiially released in 1969, the album was made available previously this year as part of Glenn Frey’s Above The Clouds: The Collection box set. The long out of print album and blueprint of the California Sound will soon be available as standalone CD and LP release and is available for pre-order at Amazon.com.
Tom Thacker produced the set, and it was remixed and remastered by Elliot Scheiner —who has worked with Toto, Steely Dan and The Eagles — along with J.D. Souther.
After their recording company Amos Records shut down Glen Frey co-founded The Eagles, while Souther focused on a solo solo career, but they remained friends and often always reminisced earlier times together.
Detroit Michigan native Glen Frey later recounted the very first day he first met J.D.Souther. “My very first day in California, I drove … to Laurel Canyon, and the first person I saw standing on the porch at the Canyon Store was David Crosby," he recalled. "He was dressed exactly the way he was on the second Byrds album — that cape and the flat wide-brimmed hat. He was standing there like a statue. And the second day I was in California I met J. D. Souther.”
Souther had fond memories of the late Frey as well, “He was my roommate, best friend, and first songwriting partner in Los Angeles,” Souther said.
