First Known Recording of David Bowie Found in a Bread Basket
The drummer and manager of The Konrads found the film, which will be auctioned in September The musician was then 16 years old
At age 16, David Bowie was not yet the White Duke but he already had his first band: The Konrads. The musician played the saxophone, until one day, after an accident suffered by the singer, he stood before the microphone.
They played rock and roll versions and performed at weddings and family gatherings, until their agent Eric Easton, who also worked with The Rolling Stones, invited them to participate in an audition for the Decca label. So, in a small studio in Modern, south of London, they started recording a demo.
There, the drummer and manager of the band, David Hadfield, decided to play the song "I Never Dreamed" and that Bowie would be the best person to sing it. This was the first studio recording of a song sung by David Bowie in 1963. The tape, which was lost for decades, has just reappeared and will be auctioned in September, the company Omega Auctions, which will be in charge of the project, said in a statement today. of the bid.
It was Hadfield who announced the discovery of the recording. While he was leaving the house, he found it hiding in an old bread basket that had belonged to his grandfather, along with photographs, promotional sketches, letters, tickets, among other souvenirs.
Omega Auctions will be in charge of moving the hammer in September of this year in Newton-le-Willows: the starting price will be placed at 11,000 euros.
The record then discarded The Konrads and, months later, Bowie left the band for creative differences. The musician would then begin the journey to become an icon of twentieth-century music. Bowie died in January 2016, due to cancer, two days after the release of his 25th studio album, Blackstar
