Elvis Presley to be Honored With The Presidential Medal of Freedom
President Donald Trump selected the late Elvis Presley as one of the recipients of this year's Presidential Medal of Freedom, as announced by the White House on Saturday (November 10).
"Elvis Presley defined American culture to billions of fans around the world," says the White House statement. "Elvis fused gospel, country, rhythm and blues to create his own sound, selling more than a billion records. Elvis also served almost two years in the United States Army, humbly accepting the call to serve despite his fame. He later starred in 31 films, attracted record audiences to his shows, upped the television rating and garnered 14 Grammy nominations. He finally won three Grammy awards for his gospel music. Elvis Presley remains an enduring American icon four decades after his death."
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is recognized as the highest civil honor in the United States, granted to those whom the President believes have made "a meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace or to endeavors." cultural or other important public or private".
In addition to Presley, other recipients are former baseball player Babe Ruth, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, former football player Roger Staubach, Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan C. Page, Senator Orrin G Hatch and the doctor Miriam Adelson .
Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Friday (November 16).
This will mark the first time that Trump awards the Medal of Freedom as acting president.
Barack Obama awarded Medals of Freedom to stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Stevie Wonder, Tom Hanks, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Cicely Tyson, Gloria Estefan, Steven Spielberg and Barbra Streisand .
