Elton John's Christmas Commercial Is a Praised And Emotional Experience
John Lewis, a chain of stores in the UK, launched their Christmas commercial 2018 starring Elton John. Some sources indicate that the British singer received 6.5 million dollars for four days of filming.
The extensive television commercial, which lasts two minutes and 20 seconds, begins with John playing "Your Song" on a piano, before his life and his best moments go by, until we discover that this piano was a Christmas gift that he received when he was a child.
"John Lewis' Christmas campaign has many memories for me and my family," John said in a statement. "It was a beautiful opportunity to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I've been on, and how the first time I played my grandmother's piano marks the moment music entered my life. The commercial is absolutely fantastic and I really loved being part of it every minute."
"I think Elton has tremendously enjoyed the process of doing this," added David Furnish. "I think he's emotionally thinking about the trip he's been on as an artist. The Christmas campaign of John Lewis is an emblematic part of Christmas and has had so many memories and associations for us, with all of our Christmases, so the fact that they asked us to be part of that was a great honor."
Earlier this year, a source told a UK newspaper that "John Lewis wanted to win the battle of Christmas commercials this year, and it has cost them a significant amount to do so. They think that having Elton on board will guarantee their popularity and destroy Marks & Spencer [the chain of rival stores]. "
