Duet by Mick Jagger and Carly Simon Discover After 45 Years
A song written and recorded by Mick Jagger and Carly Simon during a one-hour piano session has been rediscovered after 45 years.
Thought to be called "Fragile", it has never been heard in public, although some short sections have appeared in the pirate collections of Rolling Stones fans.
Billboard reported that the "slow ballad of love that has Jagger and Simon seemingly sitting together on a piano and singing" was found on a tape by Matt Lee, a London collector of the Stones. He said he had transferred the tape to digital and sent a copy to Rolling Stone magazine so that it could later be sent to Carly Simon. "I'm not doing it for money," Lee said. "I'm a collector. My reason for sending it to Rolling Stone was to pass it to Carly."
During a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Simon talked about that 1972 song, confirming that it had been recorded after Jagger made a special appearance in her song "You're So Vain", already turned into a classic.
In her book, the singer related that they had recorded another theme that in one of her verses said: "Funny, funny, funny, funny, funny / How to love can make you cry". But he never knew where the recording went: "Producer Richard Perry was looking for that tape for years. Someone from Warner Brothers should have it, "Simon said.
"We sat down at the piano and started playing these chords," he recalled. "Mick asked me how I knew them all. I played the line chord sequence [in 'You're So Vain'] that says ' You gave away the things you loved ' and started singing. We were around that piano for about an hour. And then Paul and Linda [McCartney] came in , because they wanted to meet Mick. They had never seen each other before."
Simon said he had only seen Mick Jagger twice since then, and felt "uncomfortable" during the most recent experience, when he sat near him at a party. "My relationship [with Mick] happened at a time that was very inconvenient. And there was certainly a great electricity between us. It made me nervous. But I am eternally grateful that you have sung [in 'You're So Vain']. At that time I was in a relationship with James Taylor. Mick has a very, very attractive way of being with you, whether you're a man or a woman. It is incredibly seductive. I could not accept those charms because I was already in love. I do not know if he was hurt."
