Def Leppard Wins The Fan Vote For Rock Hall Induction
Def Leppard moved one step closer to entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after a convincing victory in the public vote, which closed last night.
The British band obtained 547,647 votes, ahead of Stevie Nicks (427,844), Todd Rundgren (365,370), The Zombies (329,052) and The Cure (264,443).
The five most voted groups or soloists receive an additional vote in the final selection, beyond the support provided by members of the Salon, which includes artists, industry executives and others. Although winning the popular vote does not guarantee induction, all artists who have won since its introduction in 2012 have received that honor.
"We do not get excited too, " said recently Def Leppard singer, Joe Elliott, to Ultimate Classic Rock. "The nomination in one thing, being induced is another. Essentially, it is worth one thousandth of the entire vote, so it is not worth much numerically speaking. The other 999 [voters] have no choice but to take note of it."
He noted that "their representatives, their secretaries, are all watching this. Or they are involved in some way with the social networks that every day indicate that Def Leppard are number 1 or that someone else is. It's like a horse race. Well, they have to take note of the vote, one way or another. They can vote against, on principle, or they can say: 'Well, it's okay, I understand. I think I have to say yes in this case."
The class of 2019 will be announced on December 13. The admission ceremony will take place in New York on March 29.
