Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, The Zombies and Roxy Music will be included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year. The Hall broke with its tradition of inducing five artists and in 2019 there will be seven.
The Cure, Janet Jackson and Radiohead will also enter, at a ceremony that will take place at the Barclays Center in New York on March 29.
This was the first year of candidacy for Def Leppard, Roxy Music and Stevie Nicks, who was previously admitted for her work with Fleetwood Mac .
Def Leppard and Nicks also led the public vote . Two other new members, The Zombies and The Cure, finished in the top five. Todd Rundgren was the only artist who this year had the chance to be voted by the public but finally was not admitted.
According to a Rock Hall press release, the votes were counted from the ballots sent to "an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, including the current Induced, historians and members of the music industry. They take into consideration factors such as the musical influence of an artist on other artists, the length and depth of their career and work, innovation and superiority in style and technique."
"Guys, girls, everyone, thank you very much for voting for us for the 2019 nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," said Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott. "We will be there in March because they voted for us. Thank you".
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Elliott delved into the importance of fans of the band. "I think it's a nice badge of honor," he said. "I do not think it's going to make a big difference for many people. It was something that did not worry us too much until the voting of the public became an important part. The people that really matter for each band are the public. You have to go through the media, the radio, the television, the A&R people of the label to reach the public, but the public is the main objective of any artist. Now the people in the [nomination] committee, none of us knows who they are, but once the public vote became something important that's when we started thinking 'Well, now this starts to mean something' ".
For his part, Colin Blunstone, singer of The Zombies, told Rolling Stone that entering Rock Hall is "a moment that defines career and life."
"We have had many ups and downs in a 50-year career," he added. "This is the pinnacle, the fact of being included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What a reward for all the ups and downs over the years."
Stevie Nicks indicated that "I have a lot to say about this, but I will keep those words for later." She added: "For now I will only say that I have been in a band since 1968. Being recognized for my work as a soloist makes me breathe deeply and smile. It is a glorious feeling."
In his Twitter account, Bryan Ferry, singer of Roxy Music, wrote: "We are delighted to accept this prestigious award on behalf of all those who have been involved in the world of Roxy Music: musicians, engineers, producers, designers and numerous people in the backstage ... and, of course, our loyal fans."
